Program: “Sustainable Agriculture – Past, Present & Future”
Speaker: John Weston Owner – Weston’s Farm LLC, Fryeburg, ME
Sustainability has many interpretations and can be applied in many ways.
For the Weston family of Fryeburg it has been a way of life for over 200 years. John, representing the 7th generation on the farm, will present a slideshow with of a brief history of his family’s farm, their current operations and the possible future for the farm and agriculture in the Valley.
Currently the Weston’s manage over 1200 acres of vegetables, timber and Christmas trees. They operate both with conventional farming methods and as a certified organic grower. John will discuss how these two farming methods coincide and offer tips on small scale organic farming.
At the end of the presentation John will ask the group for their input on some pressing topics: Can the current “Eat Local” movement save small agriculture? Does our society place enough importance on food? Will the next generation be able to feed us? How will organic farming shape our food supply?
