The White Mountains have a unique and in some cases endemic collection of alpine plants.  This slide program will explore the intriguing natural history and origins of these arctic outliers.  We will discuss their adaptations to some of the harshest weather, distribution in the alpine zone, and their sensitivity to hiker impact and climate change.

Dick Fortin currently teaches environmental courses  for Granite State College, including “Botany of the White Mountains”.  He is on the advisory board of the Welch Mountain Stewardship project, and in the past, served as an adjunct professor for Antioch New England Graduate School, teaching Alpine Flora.
