HISTORY - The Mountain Garden Club was established in 1973 and is a Federated member of the New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs – District 1, and of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. – New England Region. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. MISSION — The Mountain Garden Club is dedicated to promoting horticultural education, civic beautification, and conservation through volunteerism and friendship in the Mount Washington Valley. VISION - Our vision is a community where the Mountain Garden Club is recognized as the organization in the Mount Washington Valley for “all things green”: 1. Horticultural Education 2. Civic Beautification 3. Environmental Stewardship
MEETING SCHEDULE - the club meets on Mondays, once a month, from September to June. Please refer to the website calendar for the meeting schedule. There are no meetings in the summer months to allow members to devote time to Civic Improvement, other special projects, and especially their own gardens. PROGRAMS — presented at the monthly meeting they provide educational opportunities for members on a varying number of subjects from a wide variety of experts in their respective fields. MEMBERSHIP — is open to all residents (male & female) in the cities and townships, which collectively make up the region known as Mount Washington Valley. Dues are $20 per year for Active Members. GEOGRAPHIC AREA – Currently, our members come from the New Hampshire towns of: Jackson, Glen, Bartlett, Intervale, Kearsarge, Hales Location, North Conway, Center Conway, Conway, Madison, Eaton, Freedom, Silver Lake, Moultonborough and also Fryeburg, Maine. Total membership at the present time is just over 150 members. Membership is open to both men and women. ACTIVITIES - We are actively engaged in roadside beautification and conservation in the Valley in our Civic Improvement Projects.
The Mountain Garden Club also sponsors events such as: Flower sales for Cancer awareness (Jen’s Friends), Scholarship Funds (for an eligible Mount Washington resident), Boutique / Plant / Flower shows - at various times of the year (to support MGC community projects).
The Flower/Home Garden Show raffles support our Scholarship Fund. Not to be missed is our Winter Boutique which not only supports our projects and activities, but also funds the Holiday decorations which we create and donate to adorn the public buildings throughout Mount Washington Valley.
The MGC works with local nursing homes in our Garden Therapy. Our current project involvement is with Merriman House at Memorial Hospital.
The club is pleased to work with local schools on their horticulture programs. We select one school each year to plant a “Memory Tree” with the local students. We also participate in the NGC initiative with the US Forestry Service on fire and conservation awareness for school children through the “Smokey Bear / Woodsy Owl” poster contest for grades 1 through 5. The MGC also organizes special trips to museums and plant shows (as a member social activity) and is also actively involved in our local “Art In Bloom” show that takes place during the summer months.
Additionally, the MGC supports a number of community beautification projects of public properties throughout the summer within the townships of the club. |
